The arrival of a new baby has everyone shifting into gears and modifying schedules that at first glance, seem to require superhuman powers. Amazingly, one tiny little creature, unable to walk or talk, places enormous demands on time and energy. America is all about gear - for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and competitive sports. Raising a baby requires its own gear.
Baby necessities only begin with a crib and high chair; in today's mobile society, equal emphasis must be placed on baby gear that takes us beyond the household threshold and into the streets. Into the car and strapped into a car seat, baby travels in style and comfort. Out of the car and into the stroller, parent and child are geared up for anything from a stroll in the park, power shopping at the mall, even a morning jog. Two babies on the way? Double strollers save the day!
From lightweight umbrella strollers that boast some of the preferred features of large strollers, to jogging strollers that allow the entire family to go for a run, strollers have come a long way. An increasing number of double strollers are giving new parents and growing families more freedom, and some are capturing the attention of consumers who demand durability, style, and versatile features.
In British English they were once called perambulators or prams and later known as buggies and pushchairs. In North American English, we know them as strollers. Throughout history, the stroller has had different names, and the design has changed to accommodate modern lifestyles, but its purpose of transporting infants and toddlers is unchanged.
Single and double strollers are convenient, and they are everywhere. Strollers move fast, but not as fast as the over-energized little people they carry around. It is estimated that 11,000-14,000 stroller-related injuries are treated in U.S. emergency rooms each year. Most injuries occur when children fall out of strollers, and up to 80% of the injuries that occur from these falls are to the head and face.
First came the baby buggy or baby carriage, and then the stroller. Necessity (the mother of invention) and demands for a more convenient way to transport multiple children gave way to the double stroller. But it didn't stop there. Families have become more mobile and active, and that has led to more choices: side-by-side double strollers, tandem double strollers, double umbrella strollers, and jogging strollers.
